The Legend
According to legend, the women grew so weary, all they could do was cry. Day and night, one step after the other, tears would fall from their faces. So, one night the men got together and cried out to the Great One for help. They pleaded that the Great One would give the women strength and hope to continue on. The next morning when they started to march, once again the women began to cry. However, in the place where their tears watered the earth, a beautiful white flower blossomed. As they looked back, the sight of these flowers began to give them strength and hope. These flowers soon came to be known as the Cherokee Rose. Although these flowers did not bring back those who died from exposure, murder, or disease, this sign of hope was said to make all the difference.
